This is the largest and finest example of the Khajuraho temples and represents the Chandela art. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it soars 31 mt high. The sanctum enshrines a lingam, while the main shrine is ornately carved and depicts various Gods, Goddesses and Apsaras (heavenly maidens) in elaborate details. The entrance arch, the massive pillars and ceilings adorned with exquisite carvings achieve their desired objective to leave the visitor spellbound.
The three main compartments of the temples are the entrance or ardha mandapa, the assembly hall, or mandapa and an inner sanctum, garbha-griha. |
