Situated between Jaipur and Alwar, Bairath was earlier known as the Vairata Nagar. An important location from the historical point of view, the Pandavs spent an year of their exile at this very spot. It was the capital city of Matsya, the kingdom of Abhimanyu's (Arjuna's son) father-in-law, king Virat. Bhim-Ki-Dungri or the Pandu Hill, cave abode of the Pandava Prince Bhim is situated here on a low hill.
Later it formed of the Mauryan empire. Remains of a circular Buddhist temple, one of the earliest temples in India, were found here. Relics from Mughal and Rajput eras are also located in Bairath. The other attractions of the area includes a mint constructed by Akbar, a beautiful Mughal garden and a remarkable monument with painted chhatris and wall built by Jehangir.
The Vairata Naga Museum here, although not very large, has a good collection of artefacts which lay claim to Bairat’s rich past. The excavated material like pottery, old coins, seals, metallic pieces, weapons and sculptures have been exhibited here. 11 kms from Bairath, is the location of the annual Banganga (believed to be a creation of Pandava prince Arjun) fair, held on the full moon day of Vaishakh (April- May)
