Named after it's founder, the Rathore prince; Rao Bikaji, Bikaner came into existence in 1488. It is said that when Rao Jodhaji (Bikaji's father) challanged him to establish a kingdom for himself, he choose the wild lands called Jangaldesh and converted it into the city of Bikaner. A 7 km wall, with five entrances, was built to protect the city.

It became an important trade centre between Gujarat sea ports and west Asian countries. Bikaner was ruled by Bikaji and his several descendants till India gained independance. Today Bikaner is famous for it's excellent breed of world famous racing camels. The city famous for it's annual event of camel festival.

Visitors from all over the world come here to enjoy the traditional aura of the ciy. It is one of the very few cities in Rajasthan who have managed to maintain it's medivial ways. There are several forts and palaces near the city. Bikaner has several reddish-pink sandstone buildings which blends beautifully with the desert surroundings.
