The advent of British rule in India and our subsequent independence from these colonial rulers resulted in the gradual dissolution of princely states, and the abdication of their territories first to the Raj, and then to the government of India. Concessions were made in the light of the lifestyles that these princes once enjoyed, and they thus retained their titles, as well as their palaces and forts.
It was both neccessity and opportunity that produced the concept of the heritage hotel, on the way of promoting India as a destination to the foreign traveller, and being unique at that. More importantly, it became an attempt at saving a fundamental aspect of India's priceless heritage and a way of retaining India's glory, earning revenue at the same time.
The heritage hotel is now everywhere, and India's history and mythology come alive in each and every one. The past unravels, becomes the present, and time is suspended till you are transported to a realm of kings and queens and treasures untold. |
