Port Blair, the capital of the Union Territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is an ideal base for touring the archipelago of 321 islands. Originally used as a penal colony by the British and more popularly known as Kala Pani or black waters, evidence of the brutal punishment meted out to the Indian patriots who were deported there to serve life sentences can be seen at the Cellular Jail, now declared a national monument.
