Bobbili is associated with the historic battle of Bobbili, fought on January 24, 1757. The battle was between the zamindar of Vizianagaram; Vijayarama Raju aided by the French on one side and the Raja of Bobbili, Gopalakrishna Ranga Rao on the other.

Bobbili Fort is located in Vijayanagaram district. The earlier name of this town was Peddapuli which means Tiger.
