Situated in the Chittoor district the Kaundinya sanctuary has an area of about 357.60 sq km. It is a rugged area containing high hills and deep valleys with the streams Kaigal and Kaundinya. Southern tropical thorn type of forests covering the areas.
The flora consists of albizia amara, ficusreligiosa, ficus tomentosa, ficus bengalensis and bamboo, regeneration of santalum album is also found.
The wild life found here is the cheetal, four horn antelope, samber, mouse dear, hare, porcupine, wildboar, jungle-cat, jackal, sloth bear, panther, jungle fowl, pea fowls and elephants.
The sanctuary is at a distance of about 50 km. from Chittoor, and 120 km. from Bangalore. The best season to visit the sanctuary is from Oct- April. |
