The Mecca Masjid was started in 1614 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah and was completed in 1687 by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. It is one of the largest mosques in the world. It can accomodate upto 10,000 worshippers.
The minarets were intended to be much higher but Aurangzeb, as he did with Bibi-Qa-Maqbra, sacrificed aesthetics to economy.
The mosque is built into the central arch hence the name. A room in the courtyard is said to have sacred relics, one of which is the hair of The Prophet.
To the left of the mosque is an enclosure containing the tombs of Nizam Ali Khan and his successors. |
