The Sea Gate of the Fort of Saint Hyeronnymus (Saint Jerome) known as the Fort Of Daman stands guard on the northern banks and the estuary of the River Damanganga. A silent and imposing testimony to one of the most active centres of the past, in the East.

The stone cross is carved from a single piece of stone of 4 ft having a crown of thorns at the centre and three nails at it's extremities. The statue of Saint Jerome is 7.5 ft in height with the pedestal and part of the niche also carved from a single piece of stone. The fort was constructed by order of the Vice-Roy D. Jeronimo de Azavedo in the year of 1614 and was completed during the Vice-Reignship of D. Francisco de Gama, Count-Admiral, in the year 1627.
