Ki, the oldest and largest gompa in Spiti, has a spectaculare location (4116mt), 14 km from Kaza. It was built by the famous Tibetan translator Ringchen Zangpo and belongs to the Gelukpa order. The gompa is famous for it's priceless collection of ancient thankas. Ki has a chaam festival in Jun-Jul.
Kibber, 11km from Ki village, is also known as Khyipur. Kibber was once a part of the overland salt trade. At 4205 mt, it is the highest permanentaly inhabited village of the region. The Ladar festival held here each July, attracts Buddists from all over the region. |
