Paonta Saheb, a bustling town in the Shiwalik hills on the banks of the holy river Yamuna, is a major pilgrim site of the Sikhs, because of its association with Guru Govind Singh, the 10th guru. It is to these foothills that the young Guru was brought after the execution of his father in order to protect him from his enemies. He spent a good part of his youth here and it was in Paonta that he learnt the ways of warriors. It was on this soil that Govind Singhji fought his first battle which was against the neighbouring rajas. The gurudwara at Paonta Saheb is dedicated to Guru Govind Singhji. |
