Sarahan, about 176 km from the capital Shimla and 40 km from Rampur, is situated in the Sutlej valley at an altitude of 1920 meters. The ancient capital of Rampur Bushehr, one of the biggest princely states in the Shimla hills, it is today a tiny but beautiful village surrounded by apple orchards, presenting a magnificent spectacle of snow-covered peaks and a picture of unspoilt pastoral life, and dominated by Shrikhand Mahadev peak (5227 meters) which resembles the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva, the Shivling. Pilgrims take 5 to 6 days to complete a parikrama, or complete circle, around this Shivling-like mountain.
