Tipu Sultan's Palace, built of teakwood, was constructed between 1781-1791. It was started by Hyder Ali and completed by Tipu. The palace is a five minute walk south-west of the city market. Particularly note-worthy are the floral designs on the walls and ceilings. After Tipu's death the palace was used as the secretariat by the British until 1867.
