Udupi (about 60 km from Mangalore) is the place where the propounder of Dwaitha philosophy, Madhwacharya, lived and taught 700 years ago.

Udupi, the seat of Dwaitha philosophy and the abode of Sri Krishna Temple and Ashta Math is a renowned centre of religion and philosophy in Karnataka. The temple and the eight monasteries were established by Madhwacharya.

It is described in the traditional, religious literature as "Rajatha-Peetha" and was deemed to be one of the seven holy paces of Tamil Nadu. Udupi emerged as a great centre of vedantic philosophy after the advent of Sri Madhwacharya.

Situated amidst captivating hill settings is the Subramanya temple where the Nagas sought the protection of Sri Subramanya. Kartikeya is worshipped here in the form of cobra. This peaceful resort attracts people from far and near during Subramanya Shashtri.
