Lakshwadweep

The islands of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, an archipelago of 27 coral islands and open reefs, spread out over 200-400kms are near to Kerala. Andrott, Amini, Agatti, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmath, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltanand Minicoy are the only inhabited islands. These islands form the smallest of the Union Territories of India. About 93 percent of the people in Lakshadweep are Shafi Muslims of the Sunni sect, and they speak Malayalam.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the Lakshadweep economy, the major products being coconut and coir. Coconut is the only major crop grown here. Coconut fibre extraction and conversion of its fibre products is the main industry in the islands. The other major activity here, is fishing.

Lakshadweep literally mean a hundred thousand islands. They look absolutely enchanting, yet only a handful of the 36 islands are open to tourists. Of these, one - Bangaram is an uninhabited island with just an island resort.

The water here is exceptionally clean and it is an excellent place to go deep sea diving.

This is also home to the world's largest swimming pool - a coral lagoon where you can fish, snorkel, swim and laze away.
