Minicoy is a very large island situated 200 km to the south of the Kavaratti island and near Maldives. The incredibly sized lagoon is one of the largest in Lakshadweep, and the green coconut trees and mirror-like surface of an inland lake situated in a corner of the island are breathtaking. Its most distinctive feature is a light house built by the British in 1885.
Minicoy differs from other islands with respect to dress, food, language and many other aspects. Minicoy has a cluster of 10 villages, which are called Athiris, each presided over by a Moopan. The beautiful lava, a traditional dance, is performed on various occasions.
There is a tuna canning factory, signifying its importance in tuna fishing, and a large amount of boat building activity on the island. Privately managed cottages have been built on the isolated beaches and are available for tourists.
