Bandra is a prosperous, modish suburb. Known as the 'queen of suburbs', it is the first of the city's outlying areas to offer a credible lifestyle alternative to south Mumbai. It is a relaxed, unharassing and clean place. The main attraction of Bandra is the Basilica of mount Mary, the shopping is good, there are a lot of restaurants and the nightlife jumps on a Saturday night.
There are tranquil by-lanes where close-knit Christian communities live in tiled roof villas still evoke the village Bandra was only a few short decades ago, and the sea front is still the home of a small Koli fishing community. The suburb has a strong Catholic heritage and remained under the Portugueese control until the late 18th century. It was joined to the rest of Mumbai by the Mahim cause-way in 1845. Bandra has bunglows of many film stars.
The suburb's main through-fares are Turner hill and waterfield roads. The shops lining linking road between Bandra and Khar are especially good for shoes & fashion wear. |
