Situated between Aurangabad and the Ellora caves lies the amazing hilltop fortress of Daulatabad. %km of strong walls run around the fort, while the central bastion tops a 200 mt high hill, which was originally known as Devagiri, the hill of the Gods.
Climb to the top for the superb views over the surrounding countryside. A magnificient tower of victory, known as the Chand mahal (tower of the moon), built in 1435, soars 60 mt.
One can also see the high rising blue-tiled Chini mahal where the last king of Golconda was imprisoned for 13 years until his death. Finally, you climb the central fort to a 6 mt cannon, cast from 5 different metals and engraved with Aurangzeb's name. |
