Named after the Roman Goddess of abundance, it was erected in 1869 in honour of Sir Bartle Frere, the governor of Bombay who is responsible for dismantling the fort and shaping much of the modern Mumbai. This cherished fountain stands at the intersection of some of Mumbai's most important thorough-fares, on the site of the former Churchgate entrance to the British fort. It is considered by many as the central hub of Mumbai. |
