Panchgani refers to the five hills on which the picturesque town is built. 19 km east of Mahabaleshwar, it is splendidly located with some fine viewpoints, but is overshadowed by it's better-known neighbour.
Protected from harsh winds by a table-land on one side and cliffs descending into the valley on the other, it is famed for it's table-land and plateau. It is also known as the 'Mecca of Maharashtra'. Along with Mahabaleshwar, it is the country's largest strawberry-producing region.
Places worth visiting are the Bhilar table-land, Meherbaba caves, Kamalgar fort, Harrison's folly, Sydney point, Devil's kitchen and the Ganesh temple. |
