The August Royal Bombay Yacht Club, looks directly onto the Gateway of India. It was built in 1898 in a mishmash of Gothic styles and is one of those institutions where the clock seems to have stopped in the 19th century. The club's reception is staffed by cadets decked out in sailor uniforms and the interiors contains enough maritime memorabilia to start a small museum.
The landscape between the Yacht Club and the Gateway of India is a favourite picnic spot. It has the statue of the Maratha leader Shivaji astride his horse. |
