This 104 sq km protected area of forested hills on the city's northern fringe, formerly called the Borivali National Park, has aninteresting flora, birdlife, butterflies and boasts a small population of tigers. It is a fantastic asset to have within the city's limits but is under serious threat from urban encroachment.
The park contains the 109 Kanheri caves, which line the side of a rocky ravine 5 km from the northern park entrance. They were used by the Buddhist monks between the 2nd and 9th centuries as viharas and chaityas (temples). Lion and tiger safaries are also conducted here. |
