Satara has a number of relics of the Maratha warrior leader Shivaji, the most well known of which is the Wasota Fort. The fort is situated in the south of the town and has a colourful and bloody history, including being captured from Marathas in 1699 by the forces of Aurangzeb, only to be recaptured in 1705 by means of a Brahmin who befriended the fort's defenders, then let in a band of Marathas. Another landmark is the Shivaji Maharaj Museum, which houses memorabilia belonging to the times of this great hero. |
