Orissa known as Kalinga in ancient times, fell to Emperor Ashoka in 260 B.C. But a transformed Ashoka, spread non-violence and Buddhism in the state. Jainism also flourished in the state and it was only in the 7th century A.D., that Hinduism made it's renewed presence felt in Orissa. Many Hindu temples were built under the rule of the Kesari and Ganga Kings until its annexationto the Mughal Kingdom in the 16th century. Later the Marathas occupied Orissa and continued to do so till the British took over in 1803.
