The Colossal and amazing Motibagh Palace in Patiala, built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s father was designed in an unusual mixture of Rajput, Mughal and Victorian styles of architecture.
The Palace has fifteen dining rooms and an enormous Durbar Hall lit up by a hundred crystal chandeliers. Within the vast compound is the Baradari, a smaller marble palace and the Sheesh Mahal, built as a residence for the older ladies of the family.
Despite the vastness, the Motibagh Palace was always fully occupied by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s many wives and numerous progeny. The old Palace is now the National Institute of Sports. |
