Akal Fossil Park is situated, on the road to Barmer, at a distance of 15 kms from the charming city of Jaisalmer. The 21 hectare preserve is set on a location 180 million years old.
Several fossils of tree trunks are still burried under the sand, while some are scattered in the area for view. The fossils are said to represent non-flowering plants & provide a clue to the age of deposition of sediments. The local legend states that the entire forest was so terrified of something that it turned to stone. At nearby Kandiala the deposits are probably older, but historians have been unable to ascribe a date to it.
