En-route the Pratap sagar Dam, approximately 50 kms south-west of kota lies a group of 9th-12th century Baroli temples. Built in Gupta style of architecture, these are among the best religious structures in Rajasthan.
Unfortunately these temples were vandalised by the Muslim invaders but the remains of the temples are still present. The biggest among these is the Ghateshvara Mahadeo Temple that houses a huge idol of Bhairava facing the round lingam. There are several other dieties in the temple; Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu being the main three dieties.
Idols of Goddess Ganga on a crocodile, and Goddess Yamuna on her tortoise are also carved here. Most of the scluptures of the temple are placed, for public viewing, in the Government Museum of Kota. The temple dedicated to Goddess Mahishasuramardini lies in ruin, nearby. |
