Stationed 8 kms from Bikaner, over the years the camels from here have played a decisive role in it's contribution to Bikaner’s economy and defence. The camel may be slow and lumbering, but are the only reliable form of transportation in the heart of the desert. Bikaner’s camel farm breeds camels both for ferrying goods across the desert as well as for miltary use. The Indian army has a crack camel corps. Way back during the first world war the British, realising the animals were indispensable for desert warfare, had a camel corps drawn from Bikaner. Bikaner’s camel breeding farm, hosting 270 camels, is a unique institution that has been successful in hybridizing a hardier species through genetic cross-culturing.
The camels here are mainly from Bikaner and Jaisalmer, with a few from Gujarat. While Bikaner’s camels are reputed for carrying heavy loads, the ones from Jaisalmer are known for their fleetness of foot. By cross-breeding, the attempt has been to produce superior strains, a specie both hardy and nimble-footed.
