Dungarpur, founded in the early 13th century, is an important city of the Vagad region. Famous for its unique architectural style, the region provides an interesting setting for its monuments since the topography ranges from the wild and rugged terrain in the north-east to the fertile plains of alluvial soil in the south-west.

The area is rich in teak, mahau and mango trees. The unspoilt forested areas provide shelter to the jackal, jungle cat, Indian fox, hyena, black faced monkey and porcupine.
