Kolayat is known far and wide for it's holy tank, and is a convergence point for pilgrims from all over the country. Situated in the middle of the desert next to a large lake, it also hosts a temple dedicated to the sage Kapil Muni. Regarded as the pioneer of the Sankhya system of Indian philosophy, Muni is the central feature of the place. The gilded Kapil Muni temple literally shimmers in the sunlight, it's five cupolas pointing towards heaven. The temple is also the venue for an annual fair held in the Hindu month of Kartik (Oct-Nov according to the Gregorian calendar) when thousands gather to take a sacred dip in the Kolayat lake on full moon day.
A cattle fair for trading of camels especially is part of the festivities. You will find several other temples in marble, pavilions and bathing ghats here and the small oasis town is now an idyllic picnic spot. The other major monuments in the area are the Panch Mandir, the Vijay Mahadev Mandir, Dungaser Mahadev and Ratneshwar Mahadev.
