Dungarpur district is the stronghold of Bhils, a tribe whose history of occupancy in the Aravali range is said to date back to 4000 B.C. Udai Bilas Palace is a good example of Rajput architecture with it's intricately sculptured pillars and panels, impressive balconies, bracketed windows and marvellous panels. The palace has been converted into a hotel.
The city palace can be reached by a road which winds through the narrow lanes of the town, a scenic drive through villages and countryside, or simply by trekking across the well wooded hill tracks. |
