Rumtek Monastery is about 24 km drive from Gangtok. The Monastery, the seat of the Kagyu order, one of the 4 major Tibetan Buddhist sects. Since 1960's after the arrival of His Holiness the 16 th Gyalwa Karmapa, the centre houses some of the most unique religious scriptures and art objects. The main monastery is a recent structure, built in accordance with the traditional designs of his monastery in Tibet. The 'chaam', or religious dance, known as Tse Chu, is performed on the 10 th day of the fifth lunar month (May), and depicts events in Guru Rinpoche's life. |
