Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, is one of the three wildlife sanctuaries in the Western Ghats along the Tamil Nadu/Kerala border. It is a picturesque locale, spread over 958 sq km in the Anamalai hills, at an altitude of 1400 mt.
The wildlife here includes elephant, gaur, tiger, panther, sloth bear, deer, wild bear, wild dog, porcupine, flying squirrel, jackal, pangolin, civet cat and birds like rocket-tailed drongo, redwhiskered bulbul, black headed oriole, tree pie, spotted dove, green pigeon, etc. The nilgiri tahr, commonly known as the ibex is also spotted here.
The Amravathy reservoir in the Anamalai has a large number of crocodiles. There are many places of scenic beauty such as Karikal shola, Anaikunthi shola, grass-hills, waterfalls, groves, teak forests, estates, dams and reservoirs.
Six tribal groups engage in subsistence agriculture here - the Kadars, Malai, Malasars, Eravalars, Puliyars and Muthuvars. |
