Aruppukottai is a city of weavers. The only other occupation of its inhabitants is working in the sugar mills. The city is surrounded by both handlooms and powerlooms and an indication of the organisation of the people of Aruppukotai are the division of the looms into two types of sectors, namely, the cooperative sector and master weaver sector, with the latter further subdivided into handlooms and powerlooms
