This coastal town is located 14 km from the north of Karaikal. Tharangambadi was a Danish settlement from 1624-1825. The Danesborg Fort was occupied by the British in 1801. Marks of the settlement still remain in the two churches and one fort and a museum reflecting aspects of Danish history here.

The village of Nagore, 12 km south of Karaikal, is one of the Muslim pilgrimage in India. At Nagore, there is 500 years old dargah of Hazrat Mian Sultan Syed Shahabudul Hameed, topped by a golden dome. Irrespective of caste, creed and religion, people offer their worship at this Islamic shrine. Kandhuri festival held during the months of October and November is very popular.
