The legend about the Mahamakham Tank relates that a kumbh (pitcher) that contained the 'seeds of creation', was brought here by flood waters. Much of the contents of the contents of the pitcher flowed into this tank. Current belief is that every 12 years, the water of the Ganges flow into the tank and at this time a festival is held. The next festival will be in early 2004.
