Mamallapuram, 60 km from the state capital Chennai, attracts tourists from all over the globe to its monumental splendour and sunny beaches. The town itself has the exotic look of an incomplete city of stone temples. Once a flourishing port town during the time of Pallavas, today it is a major beach resort in South India.
Most of the temple and monuments of Mamallapuram were completed during the reigns of Narasimha Varman I and Narasimha Varman II and are excellent specimens of Dravidian temple architecture and Pallava art. Robust earthly beauties, mythological episodes, epic battles, demons, Gods and animals, all breathtakingly real, are vividly depicted on the walls.
Being a coastal town, the weather of Mamallapuram is greatly influenced by the sea. There is rainfall throughout the year and the climate remains moderate.
