This is an old multipurpose project of Tamil Nadu across the river Kaveri, contructed in a gorge, where the river enters the plains. It was completed in 1934. It irrigates 1.31 lac ha anually and it's hydro power generation (installed capacity) is 32 MW. The dam provides irrigation facilities to Salem, Trichy and Thanjavur districts. There is a lovely park close to the dam. Big industrial units are also located here.
