Uttarkashi, 155 km from Rishikesh, is a regional centre and the adminstrative head-quarters of the discrict. The town, best known for trekking and mountaineering, is the base for the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. Situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi river, it has the Viswanath temple - dedicated to Lord Shiva.
