| Geography
|
|
|
|
The
Maldives is situated in the South West of
Sri Lanka, on the equator. The numerous coral
reef islands, 1,190 in total, form an archipelago
of 26 natural atolls (groups of neighboring
coral islands). These 26 atolls are organised
into 19 administrative atolls with the capital
island of Male' established as an entity of
its own forming the twentieth division.

|
The country stretches 823 km north to south and 130
km east to west. Out of the incredibly large number
of islands only 200 islands are inhabited, with 88
islands adapted as exclusive resort islands. The sea
forms over 99 percent of the Maldives. Only 0.331
percent, 298 km2 (115 square miles), of its 298 km2
(34, 750 square miles) is land.

| Climate

Maldives
has warm climate throughout the year, determined
by the monsoons. However, being on the equator,
the monsoons are mild and not as defined as
in neighboring countries. Of the two monsoons,
the south most monsoons from May to October,
brings more rain and wind. The northeast monsoon,
from November to April, is the dry season
with very little wind.

The temperature varies
little with an annual average daily maximum of 30.4
degrees Celsius and the minimum at 25.4 degrees Celsius.

History
reveals that the islands have been populated
for over 3,000 years ago. Early settlers were
travelers on the Silk Route and from the Indus
Valley Civilisation. Inherently warm, friendly
and hospitable by nature, it is easy to feel
comfortable and relaxed with a Maldivian.
A population of little over 200,000 people
is spread over the islands with over a quarter
of them living in Male’, the capital.

What
To Wear
A relaxed pace of life demands that the dress
code be decidedly informal. Light cotton clothes and
casual shoes or sandals are the most comfortable year-round
attire. A wide brimmed beach hat and sunglasses are
recommended. Most of the larger resorts would prefer
guests to "dress appropriately" when visiting the
bar or restaurants, especially at evening and night.
This normally means smart casual dress instead of
beachwear. When visiting Male' and other inhabited
islands, visitors should bear in mind that, in this
Islamic society, some modesty and decorum is appreciated.
