Cap Malheureux

In the coral reef of Cap Malheureux live the octopuses, the morays, the red mullets and shellfishes. The Mauritian lagoon was impoverished in shells, and it is today forbidden to collect an alive shell.

Near the chapel of the Cap Malheureux took place the unloading, November 6, 1810, of the English task force which, four months after the defeat of Grand Port, ensured England the conquest of the island.

The Bird Garden of Casela

This is a magnificent site, between Bambous and Tamarin in the Riviere Noire district, the Casela Bird Park hosts some 140 varieties of birds from around the world. The main attraction remains the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world, still fighting to avoid the fate of the dodo. One of the giant tortoises is 150 years old. The park is open every day from 9 am to 5 pm.

Domaine du Chasseur

Situated in the south-east of the island, near Mahebourg, in the heart of abundant greenery, Le Domaine du Chasseur covers about 1,950 acres. It is also an exciting natural hunting ground with its herds of some 1,000 deer and hundreds of wild boar.

People who appreciate leafy walks can chose between 5 and 15 km long, allowing them to admire rare kinds of trees and protected species, such as the famous windhover kestrel. A panoramic restaurant with a very good typically Mauritian menu completes the attractions of this unusual trip, which has become a must for hunters, walkers and... gourmets.

Tamarind Falls

The Tamarind Falls are a little difficult to reach, but it's worth the effort for a beautiful, deep, cool bathe at the bottom of the series of seven falls. You can see them from the Vacoas side, if you follow the sign from Henrietta. From Curepipe or Quatre Bornes, take a bus to Henrietta, then walk to Tamarind Falls.

If you're coming from Tamarin, turn right about 3 km north of Tamarin, at the round about to Magenta and Yemen. A tarred, bumpy road through cane fields leads to the Magenta and Tamarind Falls turn-off. Continue through all the 'Private Estate', 'Permit Needed' and 'Prohibited Entry' signs, down towards the power station. Leave your car or bike and walk along the river up to the falls. The path is quite heavily overgrown and you must cross to the other side and boulder-hop the last 300m along the river bed to reach the top, but the sight is worth a visit.

Around Mauritius (Rodrigues Island)

Rodrigues is an island of volcanic origin, some 550 km to the north-east of the island of Mauritius. With an area of 110 square km, it is known as the tenth district of the Republic of Mauritius. It has a sheltered lagoon of about 200 sq km and is surrounded by over a dozen islets.

Rodrigues has a lot to offer to the potential visitor and adds considerably to the holiday experience in Mauritius. It has its own specific charm: the harmonious and simple way of life of people from diverse origins and cultures, as well as their keenness to preserve both their social and physical environment. Meeting with the local population is something you cannot forget.

Visitors have always been impressed by their unique lifestyle: a charming combination of simplicity, friendliness and hospitality. Rodrigues is home to several species of endemic tropical flora and fauna. It is the ideal and unspoilt environment for the nature lover seeking peace and tranquility. Try bird-watching, or angling.

Or if you prefer hiking round the island, it's an out of the world experience. Other popular attractions include visits to caves where the incredible works of nature, stalactites and stalagmites, take the shapes of the dragon, the lion and even the Buddha.
