In the years 1920
and 1930, British established there their principal
naval and air base in the Far-East but in February
1942, the supposedly impregnable fortress was quickly
invested by the Japanese who occupied it until the
end of the second world war.

Sentosa
Sentosa island
is located in the South of the city. The tropical
forests which covered formerly the essence of the
island of Singapore are limitedtoday to the center
where we find vast natural reserves. A panoramic view
of the Singapore harbour can be viewd from here. Sentosa
can also be reached via ferries from the WTC or overland
by the Causeway-bridge.
There are lots of attractions in Sentosa. The Beaufort
Sentosa and the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa Beach Resort
offer all the facilities and amenities you would expert
of top quality resort, with the emphasis on watersport
and golf, provided by two challenging 18 -hole courses.
Visit the Asian Village, which showcases ethnic food,
architecture, art and craft from around the region.
There's plenty for nature lovers too- a butterfly
Park which is home to 2,500 live butterflies. A visit
to the Sentosa Orchid Gardens is also a must. Underwater
World, Asia’s largest tropical oceanarium, is a treat
not to be missed. It houses over 2,000 species of
fish and has a submerged perspex walkway which allows
visitors to pass safely under the water within inches
of sharks, stingrays and moray eels. The newly opened
Fantasy Island, Sentosa's spectacular new water theme
park is a must visit.

Crocodile
Park
Located
adjacent to the Jurong Bird Park, Jurong Crocodile
Paradise includes over 2,500 Crocodile in a landscaped
setting, with underwater viewing areas and a breeding
enclosure. Attractions include crocodile shows at
10:45am, 11:45am, 2 pm 3pm and 4pm.

Chinese
and Japanese Gardens
These pleasant
gardens, situated side by side, reflect very different
landscaping styles. The Chinese Garden, with its curved
bridges, pagodas,courtyards and fountains, sweeps
down to a river edged with weeping willows. The Japanese
Garden emphasis's simplicity with stone lanterns,
shrubs, hillocks and a tea-house creating a soothing
atmosphere.

Changi
Village
Changi Village
shows a more relaxed side of Singapore. The local
beach has clean sand that attracts fishermen and bathers
alike - especially at weekends. In the village itself,
there are plenty of bargains to be had— T-shirts,
electronics, carpets, Indian cotton clothing, shoes,
batik dresses,kimonos and all types of table linen.
One can also try the food centre or one of the restaurants
along the main street.

Haw
Par Villa
Haw Par Villa is famous for its colourful statues
depicting Chinese mythology. Earlier it was known
as Tiger Balm Gardens. Here a multi-media show unveilsthe
richness and diversity of Chinese culture and folklore.
You can go on the Wrath of the Water Gods flume ride,
encounter mythological spirits, or watch a three-dimensional
show on the Creation of the World, as Chinese legend
would have it. Allow three hours. Opening hour: 9am
to 6pm daily.

Kusu
and St John’s Islands
Kusu is a small
island, sacred to both Muslims and Taoists, which
has stunning views of the Singapore mainland and a
good swimming lagoon.Legend has it that Kusu was a
giant sea turtle which transformed itself into a large
rock to save shipwrecked sailors. Taoists make an
annual pilgrimage to the Tua Pekong Temple on Kusu
during the ninth lunar month.
St John’s Island is a large, hilly island with shaded
walking paths, swimming lagoons and grassy clearings
that are perfect for informal soccer. It is a popular
site for weekend getaways and camping trips.
